Australia has introduced further migration changes in 2026, with a stronger focus on migration integrity, workforce needs and reducing net overseas migration. These changes are important for international students planning to study in Australia.
1. Changes affecting student dependants
The Australian Government has announced restrictions on secondary applicants attached to most Student visas. This means many international students will no longer be able to automatically bring their spouse or children as dependants, although exemptions apply to certain groups. Students planning to travel with family should check the rules that apply to their specific circumstances.
2. Tighter controls on “visa hopping”
Australia is also moving to prevent students from using successive student visas simply to extend their stay without a clear educational progression. Students should therefore have a logical study plan, with their course choice connected to their previous education, experience and future career goals.
3. Greater focus on skilled occupations
From 19 September 2026, new skilled visa processing priorities give preference to applications connected with sectors including construction, healthcare, teaching, agriculture, resources, aquaculture and fishing, as well as certain law enforcement and defence interests.
For students, this highlights the importance of considering courses that provide relevant skills for Australia’s workforce. However, studying in a priority sector does not guarantee employment, a skilled visa or permanent residency.
4. Student visa processing remains provider-dependent
Offshore Student visa applications are processed according to government priorities. For VET and higher education students, the priority can be affected by the education provider’s position against its international student allocation. Priority affects processing order, not whether a visa will be granted or refused.
What does this mean for students?
The Australian education pathway is becoming more structured. Students should focus on choosing the right course, the right provider and a genuine career pathway, rather than choosing a course simply because it appears cheap or offers a perceived migration opportunity.
